​A little over one year ago, I wrote on my own blog, Corporate Social Reality, about why some green products take off and others don’t, and I’m pleased to report that I think my primary hypothesis holds true today. Consumers want action items that make them feel that they are making a difference, and brands can step up and engage their consumers by providing such steps. Actually, I’m happy to say that the most recent goodpurpose study substantiated several of my claims:

  • The environment is the number one cause that consumers care about globally;
  • 74% of consumers in the U.S. believe that brands and consumers could do more to support good causes by working together;
  • 66% of consumers in the U.S. want brands to make it easier for them to make a positive difference.

For this month’s post on insight from the goodpurpose™ Study, I’ll highlight the unique statistics from Japan, the world's third largest economy. In particular, consumers there stood out among their global counterparts in their lower than average rates of reported participation in social causes and promotion of brands. This result was particularly intriguing considering the high importance they professed for the causes themselves.
